Custom or default keyboard shortcuts

I have a huge dilemma these days. Should one use the default shortcuts for some apps or should one make his own? Which one you prefer?

I belive that default shortcuts are designed in a way so that they are fast, easy to learn and intuitive. But it’s not always that way. In older versions of corel draw the shortcut for select tool was F10. You know how far from left hand is F10 and right hand is mainly on the mouse. So how that can be even shortcut? Is there anything such as long-cut? And why? Nowadays some similar applications uses some different shortcuts. While in Adobe Premiere you use – and = for zooming, in Stainberg Cubase you use G and H. In Adobe Flash for zoom tool shortcut is M, in Adobe Illustrator is Z. And that was few minuses of default shortcuts.

Bonus for using default shortcuts is the fact that they are the default. Same on every computer with installed software. Alright, not every, but every that don’t have custom shortcuts. One other plus is that mainly shortcuts have their meaning. P for pen tool, for example. And they have feel, if you use them properly. Minus for them goes for time consuming process of learning new shortcuts.

For now I’m sticking to default shortcuts, and I’ll list my favorites in future posts in Tips section.
